Challenge #2:  Matching Players With Their Collections
Red Dot Challenge, Season 1 includes 12 players assembling 12 fantasy art collections.

Members of the public are challenged to match the players with their collections.
Correctly match at least one player with their fantasy art collection to qualify for a prize to be given out at the BIG REVEAL event in February, 2025. (Details about the event will be announced soon.)

We want you to succeed! So, we're going to give you the tools you need. BUT it's up to you to apply those tools and report back to us. Then, we'll all celebrate together at the BIG REVEAL!

Gameplay begins on November 1, 2024. Gameplay ends on January 31, 2025.

STEP ONE: Check out the players. Click here for the complete list of the players along with some background information about them.

STEP TWO:  You can start either by following the fantasy art collections OR by following the players. It doesn't really matter where you start. You'll have to pay attention to both in order to complete the challenge.
FOLLOW THE FANTASY ART COLLECTIONS

There are twelve fantasy art collections, one for each player.

Click here for information about finding the fantasy art collections on Facebook
You can also find the fantasy art collections on this site. CLICK HERE.

Over the course of gameplay (November 1, 2024 through January 31, 2025) the players will post their final selections for their fantasy art collections in their fantasy art collection photo albums.

Look inside the fantasy art collection albums to find out what works of art are being added to each fantasy art collection.

Each photo of a work of art in a given fantasy art collection will include a description with the following information:
  • The artist's name
  • The title of the work
  • The venue where the work is on exhibit
  • The price of the work
  • The fantasy budget level for that fantasy art collection.

Once you have a work of art in mind and you have noted the description you will be ready to visit the players on Instagram and make the connection.
FOLLOW THE PLAYERS

There are twelve players, one for each fantasy art collection.

Click here for information on how to find Instagram pages for all the players

Over the course of gameplay (November 1, 2024 through January 31, 2025) the players will each post photos, reels and stories related to their Red Dot Challenge, Season 1 experiences & interests on their Instagram account.

The posts will include
images of artworks they are considering for their fantasy art collection along with information about the artists who made the work as well as the venues where they found the works. Other information, like the title of the works, may also be noted in a post on Instagram. This information is what you'll need to match players with their fantasy art collections.

The players will NOT specifically or precisely identify which works will end up in their fantasy art collection.  But the works under consideration by the players will be depicted in one or more posts. You will be looking for pictures found on both on Instagram and in a fantasy art collection album.

After you've looked around at the players' posts you'll be ready to cross reference what you've learned on Instagram with what you see in the fantasy art collection albums on Facebook.

STEP THREE:  Track your progress using a simple online form. (The link and QR code are below.) Update the information at any time.

We have a super-cool way for you to keep track of your research then save and send in your final answers to this challenge: a google form. Amazing, right?!

This google form will remember your answers every time you sign in. Revise/Update your answers anytime. The form will be finalized automatically when the challenge ends on Sunday, February 2, 2025 at 11:59 pm.
Click here or use the QR code to start using the Challenge #2 form.

PRO TIP

More than one player may be posting a particular work on Instagram. As a result, you will have to match at least two works in a collection before you'll know for certain which player is assembling any particular fantasy art collection.

Public Participation Challenge #1: Identifying Artists In The Fantasy Art Collections

10/24/2024

CHALLENGE #1:  Identify artists in the fantasy art collections.
Over the course of gameplay each picture of art chosen by a player for their fantasy art collection will be posted in a photo album on Facebook associated with that player. The venue where the work may be found will be identified; the title of the work will be identified and the price will be identified. Initially, the artist's name will not be identified. The public will be CHALLENGED to figure out who the artist is and post the artist's name (or Instagram "handle") in the comments. The most obvious way to correctly identify the artist is to go to the venue in person. There are other ways as well. (More on that below.) The game administrator will confirm a winner and post the correct information in the notes within a few days. We hope you and everyone else following the game will learn more about all the wonderful artists in our community thought this challenge.

Five simple steps to complete this challenge:

STEP ONE: Find the fantasy art collection photo albums on Facebook.

On Facebook search for Rochester Art Collectors. Follow the page, if you're not already. Click on the "Photos" link just under the Rochester Art Collectors logo. Each of the twelve fantasy art collection albums will have a cover image that tells you the collection # and the fantasy budget amount of that collection. Links: Rochester Art Collectors > Photos > Albums

If you're having trouble finding the fantasy art collection albums on Facebook, CLICK HERE for detailed instructions.

Click on one of the albums and advance to STEP TWO
STEP TWO: Look at one of the pictures.

Once you are looking inside one of the collection albums you will see the album description at the top. (Click on the description to read ALL of it.) You will also see a series of images. Two of the images inside each album will be administrative: the album cover image and a QR code. (More on the QR code in a later post.) The remaining pictures will be of the artworks that player has chosen for their fantasy art collection.

Click on a picture and advance to STEP THREE.
STEP THREE: Read the description associated with the work of art.

Once the picture of the work of art is open you will have to look for the description of the work as you would with any other picture.

On a desktop computer the description will be off to one side near the top of the screen. If you are using a mobile phone, you may have to tap lightly on the image to see some of the description and then once more on the description to read all of the description. The description will contain the following information:
  • The venue where the work was found
  • The title of the work
  • The price of the work
  • The fantasy collection number
  • The fantasy budget allocation for this fantasy art collection

If the artist's name is listed, then someone got there before you. At that point, if you feel inspired, you can comment on the work before moving on OR just move on to another work of art (picture) in the collection album or another collection album altogether.

If the artist's name is NOT listed, this is your queue to take action! Advance to STEP FOUR.
STEP FOUR: Research!

There are at least three options to find out who made the work of art.

OPTION A:  Go to the venue where the work is on exhibit and find the work & the artist's name in real life. We LOVE this option. We hope you'll visit the venues to see all the wonderful artworks in person.

OPTION B:  On Instagram search #🔴player to find the players and all their game related posts. At least one of those posts will depict the artwork you found in the album. The post should indicate the artist's name or Instagram account. Within a few clicks you'll have the answer!

OPTION C:  You recognize the work as soon as you see the picture because you already know the artist.
THE LAST STEP:  Post the artist's full name (or instagram handle) in the comments section of the picture of their work.

Yes, it's that simple!

If your answer is correct, you will be the WINNER! The game administrator will add the artist's name to the description of the work and sing  your praises while they're at it.
FINAL NOTE:

If no one identifies the artist within a few days, the game administrator will add the artist's name to the description but there will be no winner. And that will be sad...

PRO TIP

If you ended up researching the answer to Challenge #1 by researching the players on Instagram, be sure to remember which player posted a photo that work of art. You will find the information very handy in solving CHALLENGE #2.

The official Red Dot Challenge, Season 1 fantasy art collections will be presented on Facebook in a series of twelve photo ALBUMS (one for each fantasy art collection). Each of the twelve ALBUMS will be assembled by one of the twelve players.

The newest additions to all the fantasy art collections appear on the ROCHESTER ART COLLECTORS main page on Facebook. The twelve fantasy art collections are grouped as ALBUMS. Each ALBUM contains one fantasy art collection.

To find the ALBUMS on Facebook go to ROCHESTER ART COLLECTORS > PHOTOS > ALBUMS.

Your mobile version of Facebook may be set up differently. If so, on Facebook search for ROCHESTER ART COLLECTORS and click on the PHOTOS link. The ALBUMS are typically presented above the individual PHOTOS. You may have to "swipe" to see all the ALBUMS.

Look for these images. They are the ALBUM covers.

Each album cover will tell you the fantasy art collection number and the budget allocation for that particular fantasy art collection. Click on the album cover to see the fantasy art collection. When you click on an album cover you should go to a page with more than one picture. One picture will be the album cover. You should also see a QR code with more information. (More on the QR code in a different post.)

Please remember, players will be posting works to their collections starting on November 1, 2024. Initially, you may not see many works of art in each album. Check back. Over time you'll begin to get a sense of each collection as it develops. More on this topic in a subsequent post here on RedDotChallenge.org.

Heads up! There's something we're not telling you.

We are NOT telling you which players are associated with which fantasy art collections.

"What's that, now," you ask?

Followers are being challenged to match the players with their collections. We're calling this CHALLENGE #2. Hint: following the players on Instagram will help.

In all there will be three "Challenges" for followers during Season 1. Here are the first two:

  • Challenge #1: Identifying artists in the fantasy art collections
  • Challenge #2: Matching players with their collections.

The third Challenge will be announced during gameplay. Gameplay begins on November 1, 2024 and ends of January 31, 2025.

Buying Art You've Seen During Red Dot Challenge, Season 1

9/30/2024

Followers of Red Dot Challenge, Season 1 will learn about many artists, venues and works of art by following gameplay. Mostly, followers will see pictures of art and read the names of artists and venues on social media. Hopefully all the social media exposure will result in more people visiting art venues to see the works of art in person.

You might then ask, "But can I actually BUY art I see as part of Red Dot Challenge, Season 1 for my own art collection and enjoyment?"

Yes, you can! We hope you DO buy art you've seen during the game. Helping you to find artists, arts venues and works of art you're interested in is a big part of why we created the game. So, 100% yes!

Visiting arts venues in person to see the art in real life is typically the first step.

While you are the venue you will be able to find out if the work is available for sale. (Some works may already to sold to another real-life buyer/collector. Also, some artists exhibit works of art but do not offer those works for sale to the public.)

If you don't' already know the price, it's usually posted next to the work on a label or in a price list at the venue. Some artists, however, don't list a price at the exhibition site. In that case, you'll see information about how to contact the artist or the venue proprietor directly for information.

Once you've established the work of art is available, information about how to conduct the transition will be apparent at the venue.

Every Red Dot Challenge, Season 1 post on this site (reddotchallenge.org) includes the following statement at the bottom of the post:
"The works of art chosen by Red Dot Challenge, Season 1 players for their fantasy art collections are not being purchased with real money. Red Dot Challenge is a FANTASY art collecting GAME. Players are having fun PRETENDING to buy/collect the art and modeling art collecting behaviors.

"In all instances the artists retain the copyright for their work as well as all other rights and privileges provided by the law.

"If you are interested in purchasing a work of art you've seen during Red Dot Challenge, Season 1 gameplay, please inquire at the venue where the work is exhibited."
The organizers of Red Dot Challenge, Season 1 are committed to supporting artists and the venues that exhibit their work.

How the public can participate during Season 1

9/14/2024

Highlights of public engagement opportunities during Season 1 are listed below. In addition to following the fantasy art collections and the players, the public is invited to a series of "CHALLENGES" over the course of gameplay. Complete details about each CHALLENGE will be described in subsequent posts here and on social media as well as by other methods before gameplay begins on November 1, 2024. In the meantime...

CHALLENGE #1:  Identify artists in the collections
  • Over the course of gameplay each picture of art chosen by a player for their fantasy art collection will be posted in a photo album on Facebook associated with that player. We hope you'll follow up to learn more about each artist.

CHALLENGE #2:  Match the players with their collections
  • As you just found out, the fantasy art collection albums will be posted on Facebook. Well, we aren't going to tell you which players are connected to which of those fantasy art collection albums until after the big REVEAL event after the game ends. What?! Yeah, that's right. We want you to try to figure it out. How is that even possible? The players will be posting game updates on each of their Instagram pages.  We're going to give you all the players' Instagram accounts so you can follow them. By following the players on Instagram you'll have clues as to who is collecting what. (Oh, and by the way, following the players will certainly help with CHALLENGE #1, right?) We're going to give you a form to keep track of your progress and submit your results. Correctly match at least one player with their fantasy art collection to qualify for a prize to be given out at the REVEAL event in February!

CHALLENGE #3:  Submit impressions of the collections
  • This is an anonymous CHALLENGE. We're calling it a CHALLENGE because it will offer the public an opportunity to think more deeply about the works seen during gameplay. In fact, we hope you’ll go out to see the works in real life. That's why we're playing at a time of year when the number of works on exhibit is at it's peak. And that's why we are posting information about the venues. We'll provide an anonymous form with three questions. There are no right or wrong answers. One question will ask if you perceive a theme or a through line in each collection. Another will offer a list of words for you to pick from to help describe your response to each collection. The third question will be open ended so that you will be able to describe what each collection brings to mind. We’ll share the aggregate data from these questions at the big REVEAL event.

  • FOLLOW the players and their collections in real time on social media.
