Sources To Buy Art

Our goal is to list as many sources to purchase art as possible within about 90 miles of Rochester, New York in this section. Initially we will build outward from the City of Rochester to Monroe County and then to the surrounding (six county) metro Rochester area. From there we will attempt to fill in sources from an additional fifteen counties outside metro Rochester (but inside the roughly 90 area around the City of Rochester).

Naturally, collectors can purchase works of art directly from artists as well as from these sources. Listing all the artists associated with our region would be impossible. Listing some artists and not others would not be appropriate. As a result, we will not list any individual artists on this site.

City Newspaper is one of the most comprehensive and reliable sources for art related events in the Rochester region. This weekly publication takes special pride in the way it covers the arts. In addition to event listings City Newspaper also features the visual arts and provides the occasional art review. When you visit our SOURCES page you'll see them City there as well. If you want to learn about local artists, take special note of their archive of reviews.

First Friday Rochester - On the first Friday of each month a varying number of local art galleries, artist spaces/studios, non-profits and hybrid exhibition venues open their doors to the public for a huge progressive art opening celebration. The event is organized by Rochester Contemporary Art Center.

Venues that have either closed entirely or stopped showing art for sale are now collected in a separate section and organized alphabetically and by year.

definitions & general INformation*

Naturally, any combination of the terms defined below will provide a more complex description of a venue.

ARTS means the venue is an arts organization offering a range of arts related programing. The organization may operate as a "for profit" or a "not-for-profit" under applicable tax code.
ADVISOR is someone who provides expertise to art collectors who would like to purchase art. Advisors commonly provide a very high level of information, support and services to their clients.
BUILDING means the venue is a building full of individual artists' studios. Not all artists sell their work from their studio but some do. Better still, many such buildings offer occasional opportunities for collectors to walk casually from individual art studio to individual studio where work may be offered for sale.
COOP means the venue is operated by two or more artists. Artist coops are rarely "not-for-profit" entities under applicable tax code
COMMUNITY means the venue is NOT primarily an arts organization but IS a recognized as a "not-for-profit" under applicable tax code.
EDUCATIONAL means the venue is an public high school, university or college

GALLERY usually means the venue does nothing but sell art. The art presented at a commercial gallery is usually guided by a particular (gallerist's) vision. For the purposes of this group, however, we characterize certain venues as "GALLERY" even if they don't fit all of the criteria. We do this because those venues provide a higher degree of information, support and service.

HYBRID means the venue or entity is doing more than offering art for sale.
POP-UP means the entity is not tied to a particular physical location and may "pop-up" at any time , in any location
RETAIL means the venue is a place of business selling goods, food or beverages.
SERVICE means the venue offers certain services for sale. For example, since we have some apartment buildings/complexes that exhibit art for sale, we include housing in this category.
STUDIO means the venue is located in an artist's studio. For these purposes we only list those STUDIOS that present works by artists other than the artist who works in the studio. We don't have the resources to list every artist studio. However, we do list BUILDINGS that house artists studios. See BUILDINGS above.
VENUE is used by Rochester Art Collectors instead of "GALLERY" in nearly all cases because very few locations that show art for sale meet the minimum standards necessary to earn the moniker "GALLERY". See above for details.

* The presentation of art for sale may or may not be a high priority at any listed venue. The information about works of art will vary from venue to venue. Pricing of works for sale may or may not be easily apparent at each venue. The method and means of a purchasing a work of art will also vary from venue to venue. Commissions/Profits paid to artists on the sale of their works varies from venue to venue. All listed venues are open to the public although the hours of operation vary. Some venues are "by appointment". In addition, there are venues - such as museums, art organizations, auditorium, etc. - that may have admissions fees.

Important Sources To Buy Art Outside Metro Rochester:

Listing the sources to buy art in the roughly 90 mile radius (15 counties) surrounding the Metro Rochester region is a daunting task. We'll begin with a "highlights" list and work from that point forward. It will be "under construction" for many months and perhaps for years. Still, we're going to give it a try.

Counties in New York State we are including: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Chautauqua, Chemung, Cortland, Erie, Niagara, Onondaga, Oswego, Schuyler, Seneca, Stueben, Tompkins, Wyoming. We have divided these counties up and associated them with resident cities that tend to attract art galleries and arts institutions.
